Injuries not stalling goals for Scioto's

Returning from an injury usually has the expected path. Rehabilitation is followed by those first practices and contests where everything seems a little out of form.

That is unless you're Alex Gordon.

After suffering an ACL injury during football season, the Dublin Scioto High School senior wrestler has stormed back to put himself in position to make another run at a state championship.

At 152 pounds, he was 20-2 and ranked fourth in the annual Brian Brakeman wrestling forecast.

Marsico, Ferguson make history for Pickerington North

As the Pickerington High School North wrestling program ascends to new heights, its wrestlers are doing the same.

Matt Ferguson, who competes at 171 pounds, and Alec Marsico, a 145-pounder, have become North's first wrestlers to earn 100 wins.

Marsico was the first to do it for a program that started in 2003. He accomplished the milestone in a dual match against Olentangy Liberty on Dec. 16.

Kilbourne's Atha wins OCC diving title

As Hunter Atha was growing up, everyone thought he would be a football player given the success his father had in the sport.

Bob Atha was a standout for the Worthington High School football team and went on to play at Ohio State from 1978-81 as a backup quarterback to Art Schlichter and Mike Tomczak and a placekicker before playing in the NFL for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins.

Lancaster grabs rebounding edge, holds Cruisers at bay

Joe Hites delivered a reminder to his team before Friday's matchup with Groveport: Get to the glass.

Lancaster did just that in a 44-33 win against the Cruisers, grabbing 37 rebounds and limiting its opponent to one shot on countless possessions.

"They try to take you off the dribble and get into the lane," Hites said. "We said 'Let's dig our heels in and defend.' We had 10 total rebounds against Pickerington North (on Thursday), so we sent them a message. They responded really well."

District seedings announced

The defending Division I state champion Northland High School boys basketball team earned the top seed for the district tournament at the drawing last Sunday. It will open the postseason with a second-round game on Feb. 26 against the winner of Marysville and Groveport.

The area's other undefeated Division I teams, Gahanna, Westerville South and Upper Arlington, received the next three seeds.

Wrestling team turns focus to sectional

The Delaware Hayes High School wrestling program dealt with the weather conditions the best way it could.

Because of heavy snow, the Rieman Invitational on Feb. 6 had only six of the scheduled 12 teams compete. The weather also kept wrestling fans away in droves.

First-year duo making mark for boys team

The Delaware Hayes High School boys basketball team defeated Hilliard Bradley 69-61 last Monday to move into fourth place at 7-5 in the OCC-Capital Division.

While that may not seem a big feat, it is much better than the outlook appeared before the season. After all, the Pacers had just two returning starters and were going to be guided by an interim coach after longtime coach Larry Eberst died in a small aircraft crash last summer.

In strong district, top seeding no guarantee

Pickerington North being voted the No. 1 seed in the Central District of the Division I girls basketball tournament could be compared to a political election in that the team won by a landslide.

The Panthers finished the regular season with an Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division championship and a 19-1 record and are ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press state poll.

But seeding guarantees nothing once the actual games begin tonight.

Kilbourne captures first OCC gymnastics title since 2000

The daughter of Worthington Kilbourne High School gymnastics coach Cindy Fushimi, freshman Selena Fushimi-Karns, grew up watching the OCC championships.

But competing at the event for the first time was a much different experience for Fushimi-Karns.

She placed second on the balance beam with 8.75 points and tied for fourth on the floor exercise (9.0) to help the Wolves capture the OCC-Central Division championship last Saturday at Hilliard Davidson.

Hill breaks Warriors' scoring mark

On a seemingly inconsequential free throw, Ralph Hill took his place atop the Westerville North High School boys basketball program.

The 6-foot-6 senior post player sank his foul shot on Feb. 11 against Westerville South to become the top scorer in program history. Hill has 1,354 points and passed 1995 graduate Shaun Stonerook (1,327).
