The daughter of Worthington Kilbourne High School gymnastics coach Cindy Fushimi, freshman Selena Fushimi-Karns, grew up watching the OCC championships.
But competing at the event for the first time was a much different experience for Fushimi-Karns.
She placed second on the balance beam with 8.75 points and tied for fourth on the floor exercise (9.0) to help the Wolves capture the OCC-Central Division championship last Saturday at Hilliard Davidson.
Kilbourne scored 131.025 points in the league meet to finish ahead of Olentangy Liberty (130.25), Davidson (128.35), Dublin Scioto (127.3), Delaware (115.975) and Westland (104.3).
"It was a little more nerve-wracking (than other meets)," Fushimi-Karns said. "I took a lot of deep breaths before each routine and tried to concentrate on being confident and doing my best before I go."
The Wolves, who had the meet's best team scores on the uneven bars (30.15), beam (33.8) and floor (34.5), captured their first OCC meet championship since the 1999-2000 season.
Kilbourne finished 5-0 in OCC-Central dual matches to win the league's overall championship and Liberty was second at 4-1.
